We are living in the 21th Century, so we all now what i mean with the word equality. I guess the most of you would think of human rights, cause after hundred and hundred of years of slavery and hierarchy the human society actually has the ground, the foundation of equality excepting basic human rights, the realtion beetween men and women, the social position, etc.
The definition says equality is the state or quality of being equal.
And considering humanity we know more types of equality: racial equality, social, sexual equality, equality of treatment, of outcome, of opportunity.
We may all deegree it's good to take people as equal, but where is the limit when this levelness ends ??
Egalitarianism is the belief that all people should be treated equal. You may remember the rules of the french revolution, »egalite« (egal) – equality was one of three principes set as ground and symbol of that kind of rebellion.
But can we really treat all people in the same way ? Taking the racial equality, we can say it’s no question, we can be sure, it has no limits, it’s the whole right of every race.
But let us see sexual equality. We know men and women have to be dealed in the same way. Logical. Everyone watches TV, looking the moaning of polititians, saying the quotes of women in politics and official staff is too less, the percent of women is too low. But what shoud we really consider (or they, the leaders), the sexual equality or the ability of individum ? However men and women must have the civil and legal rights, but they can’t be eqal at all, cause they are not alike and the evolutionaly differences prove it.
Or social equality. I know it sounds mean, but it think social stratification is necessary, it must be. Why ? If everyone would earn the exactly the same sum of money or anything else… it would be excepted everyone works equal, the equal level of work, the equal worktime… this problem could be actually solved with some kind of classless society without personal possession (but the experiences shows that the idea is utopian – example is communism).
And then we know the religoius equality or the equality of natioanal minorities. I guess everyone has the right to his own religious activities in his private life. But in some way one culture is build on some bases like the language, the traditional religion, habits, wonts. And usually globalisation is demolishing this bases. But demolishing of globalisation would meand a demolishing of democracy. So i leave this question open.
But equality is more than official and legal levelness, it’s departed to our personal lives. Take the example of school uniforms. In japan they are binding. Or in many private schools all over the world. But with the uniform the system is preventing individualismus. And this is also a human right, it’s a big part of personality and fashion was ever one of the symbols of definited culture.
Maybe it’s a fooly example… but many people say they listen to every music, to every style. But do the fovourisiting of a music genre not show some piece of personality ? I don’t know..just a thought.
Maybe like friends… true people are friendly and kind to everybody, but we choose our circle of friends, so these are the people we are favouring. We are excepting them higher, not equal to other people.
When a patient is the cousin of the doctor, he gets the treatment probably earlier than someone strange, true ? It’s a criminal offence, but also a normal favourising of people we know or like.
So sometimes it’s good to think about it twice, before we say what should be equal and what not.
To be continued soon….
